By car
Nancy is a 4-hours drive from Ulm, Germany, the location of ICDAR'97.

Driving instructions from Ulm to Nancy
- Take Autobahn to Stuttgart and on to Karlsruhe
- Continue on Autobahn in direction Basel
- Take Baden-Baden exit, and follow signs towards Paris and
maybe Haguenau (or Hagenau, German spelling) till you cross
the Rhine (border) and come to a freeway on the French side
- Follow direction Paris/Strasbourg on this freeway until you come
to the A4
- Follow direction Paris on A4 and exit at Phalsbourg (you
will have to pay toll at exit)
- You are then on N4 (later A33), which will lead you to Nancy
How to find the welcome reception on Thursday evening
When you come to Nancy, follow signs to the railway station
(Gare in French). The Flo-Excelsior restaurant
is at the opposite side of the place in front of the
station. Address: 50 rue Henri Poincaré. The Akena,
Mercure-Thiers and Albert-1 Astoria hotels are within short
walking distance of the station and the restaurant.

How to find the LORIA building
- Coming from downtown
- Follow direction Vandoeuvre-lès-Nancy to Rond Point du
Vélodrome (big junction with a fountain in the
midst). Turn right direction Villers-lès-Nancy (on Boulevard
des Aiguillettes). Turn left at second light (rue du Jardin
Botanique), and continue until you are directed to the left to
get on the parking lot of INRIA and CRIN.
- Coming from Lyon or Paris
- On A31, follow direction Nancy, and then Strasbourg (on
A33), until exit Nancy-Brabois-Vandoeuvre. Follow direction
Nancy until you come to Rond Point du
Vélodrome (big junction with a fountain in the
midst). Follow direction Villers-lès-Nancy (on Boulevard
des Aiguillettes). Turn left at second light (rue du Jardin
Botanique), and see above.
- Coming from Ulm or Strasbourg
- Follow direction Nancy-Centre (you exit A33 and come on
A330). Then, exit direction Vandoeuvre and follow direction
Villers until you come to Rond Point du
Vélodrome. See above.

By train
There is a direct railway connection between Ulm and Nancy.
On Thursday, August 21, 1997, Train EC 64 leaves Ulm at 15:05
in the afternoon and arrives in Nancy at 19:33.
If you want to come earlier to Nancy, Train EC 66 leaves Ulm
at 09:05 in the morning and arrives in Nancy at 13:34.

There are also direct train connections with Paris (2.5 to 3 hours),
Strasbourg, Luxembourg, Stuttgart and Munich, and single-change
railway connections with Brussels and Frankfurt.
By plane
The Metz-Nancy regional airport has connections with several French
cities, including several flights every day to and from Paris/Orly.
Local transportation
A free shuttle bus service will be provided from downtown Nancy (with
stops at three hotels) to the Loria building on Friday and Saturday
morning, and back downtown in the evening. The approximative schedule
for the shuttle bus on Friday and Saturday morning will
be:

Local city buses run frequently between campus and downtown.
Local bus from the railway station to the LORIA building
- Bus n° 4
- It's the easiest: from the railway station, take line n° 4
(direction CHU
de Brabois. Don't take n° 4 in direction
Beauregard or Faculté de Lettres, you would go
the wrong way!).
You can take this bus at the Maginot bus stop, on
Place Maginot
(see this map
of downtown). Get off the bus at the Vélodrome
stop (near Rond Point du Vélodrome).
Then, follow instructions on this
map of
campus. You have a 300 m walk to the LORIA
building. There is a bus on this line every 5 to 6 minutes.
- Bus n° 16
- You have to go to the market place of Nancy
(Marché bus stop) to get on this bus. Get off at
Grande Corvée stop and follow instructions on this
map of
campus. You have then a 100 m walk. There
is a bus every 20 minutes on this line.
