Abstract
The aim of this paper is to give an overview of the most classical definitions of fairness of exchange protocols. We show the evolution of the definition, while putting forward that certain definitions are rather vague or too specialized. We propose a structured and generalized definition of fairness and of the security of exchange protocols.
